We are beginning our unit on the ANZACS. Before we begin, lets have a think about what we already know about this topic. Working with a partner, brainstorm your ideas then add them to the padlet below.
To access the padlet, click on the link then type in the password on the whiteboard. Double click to add a new note. Remember to add your names so we know who is sharing their great ideas!

Radio NZ Children's Treasure Chest Link
We had a look at this website today and found a great chapter book to listen too. You can explore this link as well! Remember to add any stories you listen to to your reading log. Also remember - double check your understanding of any new words - a new word you understand is a new word you can use!!

Our NZ Bank Notes
This week we had a conversation about who Kate Sheppard was. After some further discussion we found that we don't really know a lot about some of the people who feature on our bank notes. We will be focusing on this for the next week or so.

Historical Park Visit
Today, as part of our Turangawaewae Inquiry topic, we visited the Outram Historical Park. While there we completed a range of activities. We had the chance to have a good explore around the various buildings and see all of the amazing collections. We found the Jail house quite dark and spooky! Zelda from the Historical Park talked to us about life in early Outram. Here are some photos from our visit.

Our Class Treaty
Our class treaty looks a little different this year as we have been learning how to make Google Slides. I thought this would be a great opportunity for us to practice our new skills. We brainstormed words that described what a good person is and what helps us to be good learners. From these words we selected our top 10-12 and used these on our slides. In pairs we found the definition of our word and also thought about what this 'looks like' in the classroom. We then had to find an image that represented our word.
Our final treaty is so large that it takes up the whole door! Come in and see it!

Extend a Bridge Challenge
I always like to start the year with a good team challenge! Working in the table groups, students had to construct a bridge like structure using only the materials provided. There were rules that went along with the challenge - the construction had to be freestanding and not attached to anything. The aim was to create the longest structure that could hold a marble on the end of it.
This task proved to be a real challenge but I was super impressed with how everyone persevered and kept on problem solving! We shared our prototype and ideas at the end of the session and brainstormed what we could use to modify and improve them. This is a task that we need to revisit! Watch this space...
